Funeral and final expense plans that spare your family the bill

A funeral in Ontario commonly runs between $5,000 and $15,000 to start, and it comes due within days. RIP Insurance sets up a funeral funding plan, insurance designed for one purpose: funding your final expenses ahead of time, so grief isn't followed by a scramble for money.

What exactly is this?

It's an insurance product designed specifically for funeral and final expenses; funding those costs ahead of need, which the industry calls "preneed." Rather than leaving your family to find the money at the time of your passing, you set the money aside now so they don't have to worry.

You choose how to pay: over 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 20 years, or in a single payment. Many plans provide coverage from your very first payment, so your family is protected long before the plan is fully paid.

The money inside the plan may grow on a tax-advantaged basis, and the death benefit may be paid out tax-free. Tax treatment depends on your situation, so I recommend confirming it with a tax advisor. The benefit is typically paid to a named beneficiary, which usually means it does not go through the estate process and is not tied up in probate.

Plans are available for a wide range of ages and health situations. No plan I offer requires a medical exam, and some plans ask few health questions. Every plan comes with a Wishes & Memories planning guide to record your wishes so your family never has to guess.

Looking for more than a funeral plan? I also write term, whole life, and children's policies.

Starting earlier makes the same coverage cheaper. See why ages 20 to 50 is a smart window to start.

What a plan can cover

  • Funeral home services and the director's fees
  • Burial, cremation, and cemetery expenses
  • A monument, marker, or headstone
  • Flowers, the luncheon, and the reception
  • Death certificates and estate paperwork
  • Donations, and travel costs for family coming to say goodbye
  • Repatriation to another city, province or even your home nation
  • Legacy gifts for your children or grandchildren

Many families set aside a little extra beyond the service itself so there's immediate cash on hand. There are limits on how much can be sheltered in a single plan. I'll walk you through them.

Why Ottawa families set this up early

The bills come fast

Funeral homes usually expect payment before or shortly after the service, long before an estate is settled or probate is finished.

Inflation protection

Plans can be designed to grow over time, helping preserve purchasing power as funeral costs rise. The exact growth depends on the plan and the insurer.

Sheltered and tax-advantaged

Money inside the plan is generally protected from outside claims and may be paid out tax-free.

Protected for life

Policies are backed by Assuris, the not-for-profit organization that protects Canadian policyholders, subject to applicable limits. Your coverage stays in place for life once the plan is paid up.

Simplicity when it counts

One mention of the plan to your funeral home is enough. The paperwork and details are handled with your funeral director. Your family doesn't administer anything.

No one has to guess

Your wishes are written down and funded, so your family isn't arguing about budget or borrowing from savings during the worst week of their lives.

Beyond the funeral itself

A few options most people don't know exist until we sit down together.

Worldwide travel plan

If a death occurs while away on a vacation, visiting family, or on a trip out of town, this covers the cost of bringing your loved one home, plus next-of-kin travel expenses if the insured was travelling alone. Coverage starts as soon as you enroll, at a one-time cost payable at once or in installments.

Final document aftercare services

Administrative relief afterwards: help with government and corporate benefits and notifications, pension and life insurance claims, identity theft protection and restoration, and reward card or membership refunds.

What it costs

What you pay depends on your age, the amount you want set aside, and how quickly you want it paid off. Spread it over 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 20 years and the monthly amount stays small. For most Ontario clients a $10,000 to $20,000 plan lands somewhere between a phone bill and a modest grocery run each month. Or settle it in a single payment and be done.

I work with established insurers in Canada and help you compare a plan that fits your budget and needs. There's no cost to ask and no obligation to buy.
